A Life of Grace

Between February and March 2026, we will be working through an 8-week preaching series called A Life of Grace, looking at the story of Jacob which is found in Genesis.

This is a sequel to our previous series in Spring 2025 on the life of Abraham, which we called A Life of Faith.

Jacob’s life was something of a mess. He has been described by one theologian as being ‘a scheming, conniving, calculating little rat’! The life of his grandfather, Abraham, was full of ups and downs but with a clear progression in which he seemed to grow in faith as time went on. Jacob’s life is like that but without many highlights or moments of great faith!

This is a wonderful opportunity for us to return to the rich narratives of the Old Testament and to learn more about how the Grace of God meets us in the realities of life.

There was not much to like about Jacob, but God chose to take hold of his life, to work in the mess anyway and to reveal his goodness and promises to him. We don’t deserve to experience the kindness and goodness of God and we cannot earn his favour, but he has freely given us it as a gift and he has showered us with his blessings.

As Christians, we are all trophies of God’s grace and we will never move beyond our need for grace. We all have different backgrounds, stories and ongoing struggles and will never reach a point where we will rightly deserve or have earned God’s favour. Without the grace of God at work in our hearts and in our lives, we would remain a hopeless mess. Thankfully, the God we worship is a God who wants to associate with sick people like us. He has poured his grace out on us and will never leave us or forsake us, as sinful as we are!

If you would like to dig deeper into the life of Jacob alongside the series, we recommend this book.

God is a God of grace. His grace is available to all. No one is beyond his reach. There is no situation in which he can’t work.

Welcome to A Life of Grace.
